Police Arrest Rohnert Park Man Who Allegedly Shot His Wife

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) -- Police arrested a Rohnert Park man Sunday night for allegedly shooting his estranged wife as she returned from work Friday.

Around 9:20 p.m., police arrested Cipriano Velazquez, 44, of Rohnert Park, near the Northpoint Village Apartments at 2157 Stony Point Road, according to police.

Police had received information Velazquez was staying at a home on Metaxa Court in Santa Rosa. When officers were conducting surveillance on the residence, they noticed a vehicle arrive at the house and leave with two people inside, police said.

Officers followed the vehicle to the apartment complex on Stony Point Road. Believing Velazquez was inside, officers stopped the vehicle and detained the two occupants, according to police.

Officers identified the driver as Velazquez, although he gave officers a false name. Officers arrested Velazquez on suspicion of attempted murder, domestic violence, shooting at an inhabited vehicle, violating a domestic violence restraining order, false identification and five outstanding warrants for his arrest, police said.

The passenger, identified as Martin Corona, 31, of Santa Rosa, also gave a false name. Officers, however, determined Corona's true identity and arrested him on suspicion of having a felony warrant for assault with a deadly weapon, harboring a wanted felon, and possession of methamphetamine, according to police.

Officers then executed a search warrant for the house on Metaxa Court. There, they found a loaded .357 caliber revolver with numerous additional bullets and one spent casing, police said.

Velazquez had been sought by police for shooting his wife on Friday, around 11:50 p.m. in the 500 block of Alta Avenue in Rohnert Park, according to police.

The victim, who had recently moved out of the home the two shared, had just come home from work when Velazquez allegedly approached her vehicle as she pulled into the driveway and shot her, police said.

Officers found the victim inside her home with a bullet wound to her chest, according to police.

Paramedics took her to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. She has since been treated and released, police said.

Velazquez and Corona were both booked into the Sonoma County Jail, according to police.
