San Francisco Police Investigate Brutal Beating By Total Stranger

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Police in San Francisco are investigating a seemingly random attack early Friday morning where a man waiting for a bus was brutally beaten by a complete stranger.

It happened in at San Bruno Avenue and Bacon Street at a busy bus stop in the Portola District.

"Our victim was waiting for a bus at the bus stop when he was attacked by the suspect," said SFPD spokesperson Albie Esparza.

The 51-year-old Bayview man was beaten brutally by a man he didn't know.

"Simply attacking someone for no reason is actually quite disturbing," said Esparza.

The suspect repeatedly beat the man just before 1 a.m. Friday morning with a stick knocking him unconscious. When he woke up he was able to walk the half mile to the Bayview police station

The victim suffered a brain bleed, fractured skull and ribs and a punctured lung.

"We don't know the motive," said Esparza. "Robbery was not a motive. Nothing was taken. Nothing was said."

"I don't like to hear this, I mean case it could happen to anybody," said Portola resident Cassius King.

Neighbors can't make sense of this, but one local told KPIX the area is very different at night.

"It's really bad out here at nighttime," explained Portola resident Janine Ruiz. "That's what I've been hearing and a lot of crimes been happening, you know? Not just for beating people, but taking purses and money and all that."

The victim is still in recovering in the hospital and is expected to survive.
