DUI Suspect, Victim In Fatal San Jose Crash Identified

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – A suspected DUI driver who allegedly caused a crash that killed a man Monday night in San Jose was 19-year-old Carlos Villalobos, a police spokesman said.

The victim was identified as 36-year-old Carlos Manrique Torres of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

Officers responded to a report of a two-car collision in the area of Senter and Singleton roads near Capitol Expressway around 10:45 p.m., police Officer Albert Morales said.

Villalobos was driving north on Senter Road, where he allegedly drove through a red light and struck a car that was turning left to southbound Senter Road, Morales said.

Torres, the man driving the car turning left, was pronounced dead by emergency medical crews a short time later, according to Morales.

After the first collision, Villalobos continued driving and allegedly hit another vehicle, according to Morales.

Villalobos, a San Jose resident, was arrested and transported to a hospital to be treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, Morales said.

He was then transported to the Santa Clara County Main Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of felony drunk driving, hit-and-run and two warrants, Morales said.

He is in custody on $285,000 bail, according to jail records.

The driver of the third vehicle did not suffer significant injuries in the collision, according to Morales.

The incident marks the city's 53rd fatal traffic collision this year, Morales said.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call police Detective Sadsad at (408) 277-4654.
