Police Say Suspects in San Leandro Shopping Mall Shootout Remain At Large

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- Police investigators say no suspects are in custody following a shootout on Thursday night between two groups outside the Bayfair Center shopping mall in San Leandro .

While San Leandro police initially detained two men near a theater following the shooting, San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus said Friday that both men were determined to be only witnesses and are not considered suspects.

One of the men is being held on an outstanding arrest warrant, unrelated to the shooting, while the other man has been released, McManus said.

Based at least partially on witness accounts, San Leandro police investigators have concluded that both parties -- a group walking and at least one person inside a car -- fired several shots at each other outside the mall.

"It appears that either the two groups knew each other or had some type of altercation before the shooting occurred," McManus said. San Leandro police said it does not appear to be a random shooting.

During the gunfire, many people took off running while others sought cover inside the mall. Several people called 911 and police responded around 6:45 p.m., but found no injured victims at the scene or at nearby hospitals. A number of vehicles were struck by gunfire during the shootout.

Investigators are continuing to review surveillance footage from around the mall and working to identify those involved in the shooting.
