Suspects Arrested In Shooting At San Leandro's Bayfair Mall

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- San Leandro police said Thursday that they have arrested suspects in connection with a shooting last week at the Bayfair Mall.

San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus said officers arrested a minor, who is not being identified, as well as 22-year-old James Williams and 29-year-old Andre Winn, both residents of Oakland.

Williams is being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and other firearm-related charges, McManus said.

Winn, who is not directly linked to the Bayfair Mall shooting, but resides with Williams, is being held on charges that include being an ex-felon in possession of firearms, including an assault rifle, and 30-round, high-capacity magazines.

The minor is being held on the same charges as Williams - suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and other firearm-related charges, according to police.

McManus said it appears that two groups were involved in the January 14th shooting and that they either knew each other or had some type of altercation prior to the shooting. He said the shooting does not appear to be random.

San Leandro police investigators have concluded that both parties - a group walking and at least one person inside a car - fired several shots at each other outside the mall that evening.

During the gunfire, many people took off running while others sought cover inside the mall. Police responded to emergency calls around 6:45 p.m., but found no injured victims at the scene or at nearby hospitals. However, a number of vehicles were struck by gunfire during the shootout.
