Reward Offered In Theft Of Guns From Locked FBI Car In Benicia

BENICIA (CBS SF) -- A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by authorities for information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in the theft of handguns and other items stolen early Friday from a locked FBI vehicle in Benicia.

A press release issued by the Sacramento FBI office stated that the secured vehicle had been parked in a residential neighborhood in Benicia at the time of the theft. In addition to the three handguns (a Glock 22 .40 caliber pistol, a Glock 27 .40 caliber pistol and a Springfield 1911a .45 caliber pistol), an FBI badge and credentials and various other FBI property items were stolen.

Authorities including police departments in Benicia, Fairfield and Vallejo, the Solano County Sheriff's Office, the CHP and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, are jointly investigating this matter.

Issues with law enforcement officers having their weapons stolen have become increasingly common in the past year. Two high profile homicides in the Bay Area -- the shooting of Kate Steinle along the San Francisco waterfront with the stolen service weapon of a Bureau of Land Management ranger and the slaying of Oakland muralist Antonio Ramos with a gun stolen from an ICE agent -- have raised the public's awareness of such thefts.

Anyone with information about the stolen items is asked to call the FBI Sacramento field office by calling 916-481-9110.
