San Jose Father Wins Super Bowl 50 Tickets Off Losing Scratchers Ticket

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- It's not often you hear the words "lucky" and "loser" in the same sentence, but a San Jose father and son just won tickets to Super Bowl 50 off a lucky loser Scratchers ticket.

Tom Brugge, a maintenance worker from San Jose,  said it took him a while to believe that he had actually won Super Bowl tickets.

Brugge said he sometimes plays Scratchers tickets and that a new Scratchers game came out a couple months back.

It's called the second chance draw. The idea is that if you lose the first round, you can enter the losing ticket into another drawing.

Tom went for it and he won.

He said the two tickets to the Super Bowl came in the mail from the California State Lottery and that he planned to take his son Thomas. But first he had to convince his son that he had actually won.

His son said that when his dad asked him if he wanted to go to the Super Bowl, he thought his dad meant that he wanted them to watch the big game together on TV.

"He has to physically bring me the sheet for me to start believing it," Thomas Brugge said.

His dad said that this would "probably be my once in a lifetime (chance) to go to a Super Bowl, but not just to go, but to able to go with my son."

Super Bowl 50 will be his first game at Levi's Stadium. He said the first football game he ever attended was at San Francisco's Kezar Stadium.

In addition to getting seats to the big game they also get an all-expenses paid stay in San Francisco for the weekend and tickets to an NFL hall of fame lunch.

And the icing on the cake is that Thomas's birthday is the day before Super Bowl and his dad Tom will be retiring this Friday after 17 and half years of working for the City of San Jose.
