Study Of Millions Of Phone Calls Finds Californians Among Most Talkative

(CBS SF) – Californians, along with New Yorkers, are among the most talkative people in the U.S., according to an analysis of millions of phone calls.

Marchex, an analytics firm, measured hold times, rate of speech and frequency of speech from four million calls consumers made to businesses using the company's software. Callers were from all 50 states and data for the analysis was anonymized.

In conversations to customer service reps, consumers from New York had the most words, while callers from California were the second most verbose. New Jersey, Nevada and Maryland rounded out the most talkative states.

Consumers from Iowa were the least talkative to businesses, using 62 percent less words compared to a New Yorker to have the same type of conversation, the company announced.

While Californians were generally talkative in conversations, Marchex found consumers in neighboring Oregon are the fastest talkers in the U.S.

Consumers in California were in the middle of the pack in rate of speech, in 23rd place. Despite a reputation of being fast talkers, the study found New York callers were the 38th fastest.

The company found fast talkers concentrated in the Pacific Northwest, Upper Midwest and Northeast. The slowest talkers were found in southern states, including Mississippi, Louisiana and South Carolina.
