San Jose Activist Promises Free Weed If You Help Legalize Recreational Cannabis

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Dave Hodges says he'll give away free weed if you help legalize recreational marijuana use in California.

The San Jose activist promises a gram for giving your contact information, or signing one of two initiatives he supports. Donate money and the giveaway starts with an eighth of an ounce of marijuana.

"I'm willing to give away up to, possibly more than, 10,000 pounds," Hodges said.

Hodges says it'll be an expensive campaign, but he wants voters to decide the future of pot use.

"Every city has a different set of rules. On top of that, we have cities and counties banning it throughout the entire state," Hodges said.

But some voters say they're not too high on Hodge's giveaway.

Arthur McAdory, of San Jose said, "It's kind of like a bribe, to get people to get his vote."

Lompoc resident Alice Dugas said, "I would make my own opinion regardless of whether I was going to be rewarded one way or another."

John Dugas, also of Lompoc, said it "sounds like he's breaking the law."

Patrick Vanier, Supervising Deputy DA, Narcotics Unit Santa Clara County said that "Any attempt to circumvent the law, we will take seriously and prosecute."

Hodges, whose cannabis club got shut down last year said he would only give away free weed if the vote passes.

"I won't be passing out marijuana to anybody unless it's legal for me to do so," Hodges said.

Hodges said that in one week, he's had a few hundred people view his website and about 40 supporters sign up.
