Renaissance Of The Beard Creates Boon For Bay Area Barbershops

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Beards and facial hair have experienced a renaissance recently, and that has turned into a boon for Bay Area barbershops.

The trend has many men looking for a professional touch when it comes to grooming.

Owner Richard Caravallo at the Gentlemen's Barber Lounge on Lower Nob Hill in San Francisco says business has been booming since he opened up shop a year ago.

"A lot of people are now starting to have cleaner haircuts. You know the shaggy longer looks are out,

One shop in the heart of the city is expanding its hours to meet demand.

"Our business is thriving," co-owner Arlen Lasater at Daddy's Barbershop in the Castro said.

"The hipsters have these massive beards, and of course they need to be maintained, Lasater said.

Justin Moore has been getting his hair cut at Daddy's every two weeks for the past year and a half after going to a salon, and feeling out of place.

"You can come and get treated well, pampered right, and leave with something that's appropriate for a guy. You know, you're not going into a woman's domain," Moore said.

Caravallo says a lot of men are looking for the edginess of a barbershop, like the ones their dads and grandfathers went to.

"We do full shaves, classic cuts. A lot of the customers that come in here get the combo, the haircut and the shave," Caravallo said.
