Popular Book Store On San Francisco's Market Street Closing Up Shop

KCBS_740 SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Books Inc. announced it is closing its store on Market Street after more than 20 years.

The destination for book lovers in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood will be closing its doors permanently in June.

Huntley Gordon has been working at the Books Inc. location for 18 years.

"A number of people have been in today saying how sorry they are that this is going away, and lord knows I am," Gordon said.

He says the store has been important for the neighborhood.

"Unfortunately, it has been a culture center that's going away. We have a lot of readings. We have a lot of events," Gordon said.

Owners say the Castro store has lost money for eight of the last 10 years.

Neighbors say they feel like they are losing an important part of the community.

"For example, I didn't even know I wanted this book, because I didn't even know it existed. And, then I saw it on the shelf, and I just bought it, and now I can't do that in my own neighborhood, and that bothers me," a nearby resident said.

Books Inc. says it isn't planning any other store closures.
