Woman Allegedly Steals Boyfriend's License Plates To Avoid Registration Fees

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- A woman was arrested in Fremont on Saturday after allegedly admitting to stealing her boyfriend's license plates to get out of paying for vehicle registration fees, according to police.

At about 7:50 a.m., the driver of an Acura was traveling east on Walnut Avenue near Civic Center Drive when officers checked the registration of the vehicle and found the plates belonged to a Mazda and had been reported stolen or lost, police said.

The driver, whose name was not immediately available from police, cooperated with police and said that she had not paid the vehicle's registration for the Acura in two years, according to police.

Police said the woman told officers that she stole the plates from her boyfriend without his knowledge in an attempt to avoid the fees and getting pulled over by law enforcement.

Police said the boyfriend reported the plates as stolen, but didn't know that his girlfriend was the culprit.

Additionally, police said the driver was unlicensed. She was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail and her vehicle was towed.
