2 Charged With Stealing Expensive Bicycles From Campbell Apartment Complex

CAMPBELL (CBS SF) -- Two men were arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing expensive bicycles from a Campbell apartment complex last month, police said.

San Jose resident Brian Smith, 37, and transient Steven Fox, 27, were arrested on suspicion of burglarizing four bicycles from a locked storage area at Revere apartments at 1725 S. Bascom Ave. on Feb. 21, police said.

Smith was identified as a suspect based on tips and further investigation showed Fox was the other suspected burglar, police said.

Around 8 a.m. today, officers served a search warrant on Cinnabar Street north of West Julian Street in San Jose, according to police.

They took Smith into custody while executing the warrant and booked him into Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose on suspicion of burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

San Jose police arrested Fox on Feb. 21 hours after the Campbell burglary on an unrelated warrant and found him with a Ellsworth Epiphany bicycle worth $3,000, police said.

The San Jose officers suspected the bicycle was stolen and took it into evidence, according to police.

The Ellsworth bicycle has been connected with the Campbell burglary and officers are working to find its owner, police said.

Fox is expected to also be held on suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property, police said.

Last week, police released to the public a video taken from the apartment's surveillance system that showed two men leave a truck in the parking lot and enter the complex, police said.

One of the men, later identified as Fox, was seen opening a door to the complex on the video, according to police.

Investigators are working on locating the other stolen bicycles, including a gray men's Raleigh 29er belt drive worth $1,000, police said.
