Warriors Steve Kerr Named NBA Coach Of The Year

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- With an assist from assistant coach Luke Walton, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr was named the NBA's Coach of the Year on Tuesday.

Walton, who served as interim head coach while Kerr recovered from back surgery complications, led the club to an NBA all-time record 24-0 start and guided the team to a 39-4 record before Kerr returned to the helm.

The Warriors finished the season with an NBA-record 73 regular-season win, eclipsing the previous mark of 72 wins set by a 1995-96 Chicago Bulls squad that featured Kerr as a key reserve.

In doing so, the team joined the Bulls as the only squads in NBA history to earn at least 65 wins in consecutive seasons.

But that was just the start of their record-smashing 2015-2016 season.

Golden State established a new NBA-mark for single-season road wins with 34. They won their first 36 home games in addition to their final 18 regular season home games in 2014-2015. The 54-game regular-season home winning streak total was an NBA record.

The Warriors also became the first team in NBA history to go an entire regular season without losing consecutive games and the first to go an entire campaign without losing to the same team twice.

Kerr is the third coach in Warriors history to earn the honor, joining Don Nelson (1991-92) and Alex Hannum (1963-64).
