CA Grants $3.2 Million To Make Central Valley Tap Water Uranium-Free
FRESNO (CBS/AP) -- Three dozen families at a Central California mobile-home park will get tap water free of dangerous levels of uranium, thanks to a new state grant.
The state Water Resources Control Board approved $3.2 million Tuesday for the Double L Mobile Ranch Park outside Fresno. The trailer park made headlines in a 2015 because of the growing problem of uranium in groundwater in farm regions of the Central Valley.
The U.S. Geological Survey says irrigation seems to be increasing naturally occurring uranium in the water. Up to one in four private wells in parts of the Central Valley test for unsafe levels of uranium, which can damage kidneys and raise cancer risks.
Water board engineer Jule Rizzardo says officials also are doing more community outreach on water problems.
