Trader Joe's Expands Frozen Food Recall Over Listeria Concerns

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Trader Joe's on Monday expanded a frozen vegetable recall originally initiated on May 3rd due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes to include a number of additional frozen food products.

On May 9, the store chain announced that the recall was being expanded to include all lot and date codes of Trader Joe's Vegetable Fried Rice (SKU/Barcode 00521482) and Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice (SKU/Barcode 00332514).

All of those two products have been removed from store shelves and destroyed. Customers are advised not to eat the products if they purchased them recently. The product should be discarded or returned to any Trader Joe's for a refund.

The recall was the latest in a series spurred by possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

On May 5, the company was alerted by their supplier CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington, that packages of Trader Joe's Super Sweet Cut Corn (SKU/Barcode 00299633) were being recalled. The packages including the following lot codes:

6180 06287xx
6180 06297xx
6180 06307xx
6180 07137xx
6180 08117xx
6180 08127xx

(the xx is a placeholder for hours of production–all apply; any codes that start with the first nine digits listed above are implicated in this recall)

On May 4, Vallejo-based Ghiringhelli Specialty Foods issued a voluntary recalling of approximately 33,610 pounds of Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad with White Chicken Meat product that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The product affected by the recall was produced April 26 through May 1, 2016, and has "USE BY" labels on the plastic packaging containing dates 05/02 through 05/07.

  • 9.3-OZ. clear plastic container packages with the label "Trader Joe's Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad with White Chicken Meat; Sunflower Seeds, Cranberries and a sweet & Spicy Vinaigrette." [View PDF of label]

The products subject to recall bear establishment number "P-17156" inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to Trader Joe's distributors in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah.

These products were added to the previously announced massive recall of CRF Frozen Foods products that impact not only Trader Joe's, but additionally affect Safeway, Costco and other store chains.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.
