School Lockouts Lifted After Bomb Threat At George Washington HS
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Students at a San Francisco high school have been evacuated and a lockout at an elementary school and middle school have been lifted after a bomb threat earlier Friday morning.
Around 10:45 a.m., school officials at George Washington High School, located at 599 30th Ave., received a call from a person who said they were near the school and had a bomb, San Francisco Unified School District officials said.
Police said that the suspect who called in the threat was on the phone to the school's principal. While the suspect claimed to be a student driving in the neighborhood of the school in a silver Celica, authorities later learned the suspect may be a male in his 50s.
Police sealed a perimeter around the high school. No one was allowed in or out of the school during the suspect search, according to district officials.
Additionally, Lafayette Elementary School, located at 4545 Anza St., and Presidio Middle School, located at 450 30th Ave., have also been placed on lockdown as a precaution, district officials said.
Police later said that they had remained in contact with the person on the phone and were attempting to trace the call. Authorities said the suspect may have mental issues.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m., the San Francisco Unified School District tweeted that students would be released early. Students who take the bus where being walked from the school to SF Muni bus stops.
Parents who pick up their students at school were advised to pick them up at Lafayette Elementary School. The lockouts at the two schools were lifted by early Friday afternoon, school district officials said.
Police and school district officials have not said whether they found anything to substantiate the threat.
