Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent Out Amid Officer Sex Scandal

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent is out of a job amid recent scandals, according to high level Oakland officials.

Whent's termination is immediate, and an official announcement is expected to come Friday.

Whent was relieved of his duties on Thursday after joining the Oakland Police Department 22 years ago, back in 1994 as a police cadet.

In May 2013, Whent was appointed as the Interim Police Chief and on May 14, 2014 he was appointed as the Chief of Police for the Oakland Police Department.

Whent's removal from the top brass position comes amid an internal affairs investigation and a criminal investigation focused on several Oakland police officers who allegedly had sex with an underage girl.

Mayor Libby Schaaf and city administrator Sabrina Landreth announced late Thursday night the appointment of Ben Fairow as Interim Chief of Police, "on loan from BART" while the Oakland conducts a national search for their new police chief.
