SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A five-alarm fire that began Saturday afternoon and burned at least six buildings at the edge of San Francisco's Mission District below Bernal Heights has displaced 58 people, according to fire officials.

Firefighters remained on scene Sunday afternoon after they were able to bring the blaze under control earlier in the morning. Firefighters will remain in the area through Monday, as they investigate the cause of the blaze.

On Sunday, the northbound sidewalk of 29th Street between San Jose Avenue and Mission Street remains open only for pedestrian traffic.

Additionally, the northbound lanes of Mission Street, between Virginia Avenue and Cesar Chavez Street, are only open for San Francisco Municipal Railway buses, according to fire officials.

The fire was first reported at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3300 block of Mission Street.

As the fire spread to more buildings, firefighters ordered evacuations for residents in nearby buildings.

Firefighters were eventually able to contain the fire at 6:27 p.m., fire officials said.

A shelter-in-place order was lifted for a five-block area bounded by San Jose Avenue on the west, Cesar Chavez Street on the north, 30th Street and Eugenia Avenue on the south and Folsom and Elsie streets on the east.

At least two people were taken to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. Additionally, a 1-year-old was treated at the scene for breathing issues, according to fire officials.

Firefighters have not determined whether any pets died in the fire.

Saturday evening, Mayor Ed Lee arrived at the scene and spoke with affected residents.
