Stolen Mail Found Inside Car After Rohnert Park Crash

ROHNERT PARK (CBS SF) -- Two people were arrested Saturday morning in Rohnert Park after officers discovered stolen mail inside their vehicle following a three-vehicle collision that sent two people to the hospital.

Around 9:13 a.m. officers with the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a collision involving three vehicles near Rohnert Park Expressway and State Farm Drive, RPDPS officials said.

Upon arrival, officers found one vehicle had struck the rear of another vehicle, causing a chain reaction with a third vehicle.

Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to RPDPS officials.

As officers investigated the collision, they found what they believed to be stolen mail, checks and other identifying information from residents in Marin, Sonoma and Lake counties, as well as residents from cities in the East Bay, inside the vehicle that initially caused the collision, RPDPS officials said.

The occupants inside that vehicle were identified as 36-year-old Elizabeth Kinder of Clearlake and 28-year-old Jonathan Amey of San Pablo.

A witness at the scene said another man that was also inside the vehicle fled before officers arrived. He was described as 6 feet tall and wearing a white sweatshirt and blue jeans, according to RPDPS officials.

Officers noted that when they first arrived, they saw Amey walking away from a nearby business. After checking the area, officers discovered Amey had hidden more stolen mail in a bush near the business, RPDPS officials said.

Officers arrested Amey on suspicion of being in possession of stolen property, identity theft and destroying or concealing evidence.

Kinder was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of stolen property and identity theft, according to RPDPS officials.

The two were booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility.

Officers were able to contact some of the victims of the mail thefts and are continuing to contact the remaining victims, RPDPS officials said.
