2 Baliffs Shot Dead In Michigan Courthouse; Gunman Killed, Others Injured

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (CBS NEWS) -- Three people, including a suspected gunman, were killed in a shooting at a Michigan courthouse Monday afternoon.

Two bailiffs were killed in the shooting at the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph, Michigan, reports CBS affiliate WSBT. A deputy sheriff was also shot and is in stable condition.

A law enforcement tells CBS news senior investigative producer Pat Milton that the shooting occurred after an inmate in custody grabbed a deputy sheriff's gun and began firing.

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey told the station that several civilians were also injured in the shooting, which occurred around 2:25 p.m. It is not clear how many, or what the extent of their injuries are.

The gunman died following a shootout, Bailey said.

The Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph confirmed that the deputy and injured civilians were brought in, but did not release information about their conditions.

In a video posted to Facebook by Greta Volkenstein, police are seen responding amid a chaotic scene outside the courthouse.

He said the incident started around 2:25 p.m., and was under control by 3 p.m
