Landmark Clock On SF's Market Street Repeatedly Vandalized

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- A clock in San Francisco is having a tough time as vandals repeatedly damaged the Market Street landmark.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

"I walk by this hundreds of times. I've seen it broken hundreds of times. I can't tell you. In fact, I've never seen it fixed," Oakland resident Brent Shinn said.

The clock was built in 1915 for Albert Samuels to put in front of his jewelry store, and soon after he died in 1973, it became a city landmark.

"It gets vandalized. Every day, every week," Keith Elsberry said.

Elsberry is engineer of the Flood Building, which sits next door to the clock. The owner of the building has taken a special interest in it, paying for its repairs.

"Street people vandalize it. They have nothing else to do, so that's what they do," Randy Campbell from San Francisco said

It gives a whole new meaning to punching the clock.

Whatever the case, it's only a matter of time before a decision is made what to do with this piece of history and street art.

It's is a city landmark, but owned by a Los Angeles company which just purchased the property it sits in front of.

"It's kind of an ongoing problem. I don't know how we're going to solve this."

Only time will tell.
