7.7 Earthquake Strikes Northern Mariana Islands In Pacific
(CBS SF) -- A major earthquake shook an area of the Pacific Ocean and the Northern Mariana Islands Friday.
The earthquake struck at 21:18:25 Coordinated Universal Time - 2:18 p.m. Pacific Time - according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered about 230 miles north of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands and about 345 miles north of Guam.
According to the USGS, the Mariana Arc hosts frequent moderate-to-large earthquakes; however, the remote location of those earthquakes makes them minimally disruptive.
There was no word of any damage or injuries. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
