Sunnyvale Pet Rabbit Wins Contest To Be On Cover Of Cheerios Box

SUNNYVALE (KPIX 5) -- A pet bunny in Sunnyvale has won a coveted spot on a cereal box.

Chestnut, a five-year-old Netherland Dwarf rabbit, won a nationwide contest and now graces the cover of a commemorative box of Honey Nut Cheerios.

There were hundreds of competitors. How did Chestnut edge out the competition?

"I think was her strength and her ability to keep going," says her owner Natasha Berbely. "In her video you'll see that she's lifting barbells which are actually made out of little piece of wood and styrofoam but she's lifting those 300 pound barbells and she's really strong and she's ready to compete."

Barbely submitted a video in General Mills' first ever rabbit showdown. Ninety-percent of the company's cereal brands like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Trix are now free from artificial flavors and colors. To celebrate their progress, they searched for real rabbits.

"By using a rabbit, they're continuing that whole natural food into their cereal so like a rabbit their cereal is nice, natural and good for you so it kind of goes together."

Cheerios is just the beginning for Chestnut. She also won a contest with Evite. The company will feature her in a new invitation.
