Homicide Suspect Wounded During SWAT Shootout In Monterey

MONTEREY (CBS SF) -- A suspect wanted in connection with a body that was found on a remote Monterey County road last month was taken into custody after a shootout with deputies early Saturday morning in Monterey, according to a sheriff's spokesman.

Around 1:20 a.m., a sheriff's SWAT team arrived at the Casa Verde Inn at 2113 Fremont St. to serve a search warrant to Paulo Barcenas in connection with the homicide, sheriff's officials said.

As deputies attempted to serve the warrant, 36-year-old Barcenas allegedly shot at deputies, sheriff's officials said.

A bomb squad was called to deploy a robot into Barcena's room. Barcenas then shot at the robot and at deputies again, according to sheriff's officials.

In order to protect the public and other deputies, a deputy then fired back at Barcenas, wounding him.

Barcenas was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment, sheriff's officials said.

No deputies were injured during the shootout, sheriff's spokesman Cmdr. John Thornburg said.

Barcenas was wanted in connection with a body that was found on Sept. 29 on Chualar Road, just east of U.S. Highway 101, in unincorporated Monterey County, according to Thornburg.

Two people have already been arrested in connection with the homicide. They've been identified as 46-year-old Jeffrey Scott Madruga and 39-year-old Julie Ann McClure.

Madruga and McClure were arrested and booked into jail earlier this month, sheriff's officials said.

The identity of the homicide victim was not immediately available.
