San Jose Man Pushes For Redesign Of City's Flag

KCBS_740 SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- A lifelong San Jose resident is spearheading an effort to update the city flag of the Bay Area's most populous city.

Ryan Palermo says the San Jose city flag is just plain and boring, not befitting a dynamic city which bills itself as the Capital of Silicon Valley.

The Mercury News reports Palermo got interested in San Jose's flag design after listening to a podcast on shortcomings with San Francisco's city flag.

Like San Francisco's flag, San Jose's is pretty standard for city flags, featuring the official city seal, and is bordered in blue and gold.

Palermo suggests maybe the flag should feature the "Circle of Palms" downtown.  Or maybe the old Electric Light Tower, a 237-foot high structure topped with an arc light that straddled Santa Clara and Market streets from 1881 to 1915, when it collapsed from a wind storm.

City spokesman David Vossbrink says a new flag design is "not something that high on our priority list."
