Driver Slams Into 2 Oakland Police Cars, Passenger Killed
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – A 27-year-old man died when the car he was a passenger in struck three Oakland police cars and other vehicles early Tuesday morning, according to police.
At 12:58 a.m., Oakland police officers were in the 2500 block of 35th Avenue investigating a shooting scene when they saw a red Chevrolet Impala speeding south on 35th Avenue, police said.
The officers had southbound lanes of 35th Avenue blocked in the area and the Chevy hit three police vehicles and two other parked cars, police said.
The front seat passenger in the car, identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 27-year-old Hayward resident Marcello Lopez, died at the scene, police said.
The driver, a 27-year-old Oakland man whose name is not yet being released, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Three other passengers in the Chevy, two men and a woman in their 20s, were taken to hospitals with injuries that aren't considered life-threatening.
No officers were injured in the crash. Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. No other details were immediately available about the shooting that prompted the initial police response.
