San Francisco's National Park Named 'Federal Green Energy Champion'

KCBS_740SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Congratulations are in order for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The National Park right in our own back yard had been named the "Federal Green Energy Champion."

It's an honor bestowed by the Environmental Protection Agency. 290 federal facilities across the nation joined the Federal Green Challenge, and Acting Deputy Regional Administrator with the Pacific Southwest Region of the EPA Deborah Jordon says the GGNRA became the winner.

"GGNRA is a model for other government agencies, and for businesses as well," Jordan said.

The GGNRA has installed solar panels on Alcatraz and at Fort Mason.

"We're proud of what we've accomplished so far, and there's a lot more work to be done," Acting Superintendent of the GGNRA Aaron Roth said.

56-percent of GGNRA's annual energy usage now comes from renewable sources.
