Berkeley Medical Marijuana Club Not Nervous About Legalizing Recreational Use

KCBS_740

BERKELEY (KCBS) – With polls showing that California voters are likely to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, one might think that medical cannabis clubs are nervous about losing customers. Some are quite the opposite.

Berkeley Patients Group is confident that quality products and customer service will see it through whatever ups and downs the legalization of recreational marijuana might bring to California's medical cannabis market.

Sabrina Fendrick, government affairs director of the Berkeley Patients Group, said the rules are quite different for each.

"While there are restrictions on adult use, you don't need a medical marijuana recommendation, but you are restricted to one ounce, you are restricted to being able to grow a certain number of plants," Fendrick told KCBS. "If you have a medical card, you are allowed to possess and cultivate what your doctor considers adequate."

Paul Armentano, deputy director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), said the medical and adult use markets peacefully coexist in other states.

"Look at Colorado. Medical marijuana continues to flourish. The state registry for medical marijuana patients has continued largely unabated," Armentano said.

A KPIX 5 / SurveyUSA poll found 54 percent of likely and early California voters supported Proposition 64, which would legalize, regulate and tax marijuana for recreational use, while 39 percent are opposed.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percent.
