Shooting Suspect Surrenders After Hours-Long Hayward Standoff
HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- A suspect in two recent East Bay shooting was led away in handcuffs Monday morning after a tense hours-long police stand-off in Hayward, according to authorities.
Oakland police Captain Ersie Joyner III said officers were staked out outside an apartment at the corner of Valle Vista Avenue and Dixon Avenue in Hayward.
According to Joyner, an OPD Ceasefire team was conducting an investigation into a pair of recent shootings, the first of which happened several weeks ago and a second that took place Sunday night.
According to police, the suspect was pursued after he shot a prostitute in Oakland Sunday evening. He then fired shots at a trucker along Highway 238 before ending up in Hayward.
An Oakland police pursuit led to the standoff, which started at around 11 p.m. Sunday. The suspect barricaded himself inside an apartment building on Dixon Avenue, Joyner said.
According to authorities, the apartment belongs to the suspect's grandmother. When the standoff started, eight other people were inside the apartment, but seven were evacuated at around 4 a.m. without incident.
Police said there was one elderly, bed-ridden man who remained inside during negotiations with the suspect, which slowed the negotiation process.
"The situation was difficult. The elderly man took away our usual tactics for deployment to get the suspect to surrender," said Joyner.
With assistance from the Hayward Police SWAT team, negotiators were able to get the suspect to surrender peacefully at about 10 a.m., Joyner said.
Joyner noted that Oakland police were familiar with the suspect because of his involvement with gangs and as a ceasefire target.
After the suspect was in custody, police went inside and found a modified high powered rifle and handgun.
Neighbors were eventually allowed back into their homes after the area was secure, but at least one area resident told KPIX 5 that he wasn't allowed into his home for hours.
"I just went to drop off the girls and can't get in and can't get to work," said Hayward resident Sunny Lal.
Police have not released the suspect's name because the shooting victim and other witnesses have yet to identify him in a police line-up.
