Bay Area Braces For Cold And Stormy Weather

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A potent one-two punch of frigid air and an unstable weather front will plunge temperatures to near freezing late Tuesday night before giving way to showers that could dump 1-2 inches of rain on the region before the weekend.

Chilly temperatures greeted morning commuters on Tuesday with Vallejo registering a 31-degree reading along with Santa Rosa.

Livermore and several other East Bay inland communities, meanwhile, hovered around 32 degrees.

The icy blast from a Canadian air mass will continue into Wednesday morning with forecasters predicting temperatures tumbling into the mid-20s to low 30s in the inland valleys overnight.

The cold air mass will move eastward later Wednesday, giving way to atmospheric river roaring in from the Pacific. Showers were predicted for Wednesday evening beginning in the North Bay.

By the morning commute on Thursday, the showers will descend across the Bay Area making for treacherous roadways. Forecasters warned of the threat of freezing rain for Lake and Mendocino Counties.

The rain will continue into early Friday and could dump 1-2 inches of rain across the Bay Area.

The unstable weather will continue over Northern California through the weekend and into early next week. Occasional showers were possible.
