Hit-And-Run Suspect Accused Of Hitting 4 Cyclists In Marin County Arrested

PETALUMA (CBS/AP/BCN) -- Authorities have arrested a man suspected of plowing a pickup truck into four cyclists on a charity fundraising bike ride in Marin County on Saturday.

Aaron Paff, 21, of Novato, was arrested at his home just before midnight Saturday and booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, according to CHP officer Andrew Barclay.

The four bicyclists -- 48-year-old Spencer Fast of Mill Valley, 53-year-old Robert Grier of Danville, 55-year-old Oliver
Colvin of Larkspur and 49-year-old Joseph Olla of Danville -- were injured in the incident are in stable condition in the hospital, Barclay said.

Fast was the most seriously injured and taken by air ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. All four are expected to survive, the CHP officer said.

Officers were called just before noon Saturday to a collision on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road just west of Hicks Valley Road.

The initial caller said that four bicyclists were involved in a collision but later officers learned a vehicle was also involved and its driver drove away from the scene, according to the CHP.

Witnesses told officers that a dark blue Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling west on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road when the driver appeared to swerve to the right and intentionally drive into the group of bicyclists, the CHP said.

The CHP asked the public for help in finding the suspect, describing his truck as a midnight blue Dodge Ram crew cab pickup truck with some damage to the right side

Barclay expressed gratitude to the community for contacting the CHP with tips. He said numerous individuals contacted the CHP with information.

The information helped the officers locate the suspect and the suspect vehicle, he said.

"We were able to locate the vehicle in the (suspect's) driveway and were able to confirm with the pictures we had and the damage we observed on the vehicle it was the same vehicle from the collision," Barclay alleged.

"We brought in additional units and assistance from Novato police.

Just before midnight we contacted him at his residence and he was taken into custody without incident," Barclay said.

Referring to photos and video provided to the CHP, Barclay said, "We were very fortunate. We had great tools to work with and a great community to help us out."
