5 Injured After Hundreds Riot at Prison Camp in Sierra Foothills
JAMESTOWN (AP) -- A riot at a California prison camp has left five inmates injured, including one with stab wounds.
State prison authorities say about 200 inmates began rioting shortly after 10 a.m. Friday in Facility A at the Sierra Conservation Center near Jamestown in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
A guard fired a warning shot and others used pepper-spray grenades and other less-than-lethal ammunition to quell the riot.
Five inmates were taken to the hospital.
The Modesto Bee says dispatch communications indicated one inmate had 17 stab wounds.
No guards were injured and there's no word yet on what sparked the violence.
Authorities say all visiting hours at Facility A have been canceled through the weekend.
The Sierra Conservation Center houses about 4,200 inmates. It's one of two state prisons that train inmate firefighters.
