DUI Suspect Arrested After Causing Several Injuries, Closing Hwy 4
DISCOVERY BAY (CBS SF) -- A Discovery Bay woman was arrested Sunday evening on suspicion of felony DUI after she was involved in two accidents within the span of a few minutes in unincorporated Contra Costa County near Discovery Bay, the California Highway Patrol said.
At around 5:15 p.m. Sunday evening, California Highway Patrol reported a severe traffic alert following two separate accidents involving the same vehicle that closed all lanes in both directions of CA-4.
The accident occurred east of Byron Highway in Brentwood. Seven serious injuries were reported as multiple vehicles were involved in the crashes.
CHP officials said that a white Subaru initially collided with a motorcyclist before attempting to flee the scene. As the Subaru was driving away, it collided head-on into another sedan, which was reported as carrying five people.
The driver was 33-year-old Meagan Kathleen Campbell from Discovery Bay.
A Sigalert was issued at around 5:24 p.m.
Helicopters and ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the crash to tend to the injured.
In addition to the CHP, crews from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District also responded to the accident scenes.
The motorcyclist was flown to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek by 6 p.m., CHP Officer Larry Taylor said, from the area along Highway 4 between the County Highway J4 (Byron Highway) interchange and Discovery Bay Boulevard, about two miles east of the Byron Highway junction.
The motorcyclist is in critical condition.
Each person involved except for the driver of the Subaru sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Campbell only suffered minor injuries and was detained and questioned by CHP at the scene prior to her arrest.
Motorists were advised to expect delays and take alternate routes. As of around 7:00 p.m., traffic was allowed to drive through a single-lane, controlled passage.
