Stockton Fire Chief Arrested on Suspicion of Domestic Abuse

TURLOCK (AP) -- Stockton's fire chief has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

Chief Erik Newman was arrested at Stockton City Hall Thursday and turned over to police in neighboring Turlock, southeast of San Francisco.

Turlock police chief Nino Amirfar says the arrest involves a Saturday report that Newman injured a person who used to live with him in Turlock.

He didn't disclose the nature of the injuries or other details.

Newman was booked on suspicion of felony spousal abuse. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had an attorney.

The Stockton city manager's office has placed Newman on administrative leave.

Newman became chief of the 200-member fire department in 2015. He had been expected to retire this month.
