Man Dies Trying To Take Laptop Back From Thieves Outside Oakland Starbucks
UPDATE: 2 Arrested In Connection With Homicide Of Laptop Theft Victim At Montclair Starbucks
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A man has died from a collision after he tried to pursue the thieves who stole his laptop in Oakland's Montclair neighborhood, police said Tuesday afternoon.
The theft occurred at around 11:30 a.m. at the Starbucks location in the 2000 block of Mountain Boulevard. The victim, an adult male, was working on his laptop when one or multiple suspects snatched his laptop and ran outside.
The theft victim pursued the robbers outside and confronted them as they were driving away in a getaway vehicle.
"The suspect or suspects got into that vehicle with that laptop. The victim continued to try to get the laptop back. And at that time, in the 6100 block of Antioch, the victim was critically injured," said Johnna Watson, spokesperson for the Oakland Police Department.
One witness said the victim tried to jump on the vehicle, which was speeding away, resulting in the victim's critical injuries. The victim was transported to a hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m., police said.
Maria Chan, a florist across the street, says the victim was dragged down the block by the getaway car.
"That young man just chased after him and got the car and hang on the door of the car. And suddenly the car just drive fast. And the young man's body swing, towards the car parked on the side of the street," Chan said.
So far, no arrests have been made.
