Bay Area Healthy Food Finds

Healthy eats are aplenty in almost every restaurant in the Bay, but KCBS's 'Foodie Chap' Liam Mayclem has a few delicious favorites to share. Enjoy!

Executive Chef Annie Somerville has been serving up fresh, local healthy eats for two decades. There is nothing on the menu that is not healthful. My favorite dish of all is the Dirty Girl Early Girl Tomato Panzanella. Wow. With olive bread (skip it if you are off the carbs) plus cucumbers, basil and wild arugula, champagne vinaigrette and shaved manchego. Delish every time.

Millennium

This gourmet vegan restaurant has made an undisputed healthy mark on San Francisco dining scene. So much to choose from, so little time. Yuba Roulade will make your grumbling tummy content. Seared shitake mushroom, wilted winter greens and Char siu style seitan filling and seared Brussels sprouts with balck bean-ginger oil, star anise-shallot-red wine reduction. Have the edame horse-radish mashed potatoes on the side. The $39 Frugal Foodie menu is the best option here. Millennium never disappoints.

Girl and the Fig

Escape to wine country for a night out, lunch or weekend brunch at The Girl & The Fig. This Sonoma eatery has been making palettes pleased for a decade or more. My love affair with beets began at Girl and the Fig. The Roasted baby beet salad is the order of the day. With baby cress and crescenza cheese coated in a hazelnut vinaigrette, it pleases every time. Heaven.

4. SUSHI FOR VEGANS
Cha-ya Vegetarian Japanese Restaurant
762 Valencia Street, San Francisco
Monday to Saturday 5:30pm – 10pm

Cha-ya

If you love your Buddhist Monk food and let's face it who doesn't, you will love Cha-ya. Load up on a massive menu of healthy eats here. My reason for venturing here; the warm wickedly wild vegetable soba in a tasty kelp dashi broth. On a cool San Francisco day a warm cup of this stuff hits the spot. Don't leave without sampling some sweet endings; perhaps the Vegan Ice Cream Sundae Soy. Mmmmm…

Chez Panise

This is where the slow food movement in America began and thrived. With Chef Alice Waters at the helm you know that the Chez Panise menu is all fresh, local and healthy and it changes daily. Here are a few of the culinary treasures I have discovered: Celery root soup with black truffle butter. Or how about my favorite Oro Blanco grapefruit and avocado salad with new olive oil. And for dessert? Meyer lemon and pink grapefruit sherberts with tangerine tuile. Try the Monday night dinners offering a set menu for $60. Reservations taken by phone only.
