Summer break may be over soon, but there are plenty of family friendly activities happening in the Bay Area before school is in session. Don't let your summer slow down. Get outdoors, have fun and make some more summer memories. Whether you like to watch movies, learn about animals, dance, watch a play or go to a festival, there's still a lot of activities for every interest. If you're the kind of family that enjoys bringing your own popcorn and candy to the movies, enjoy watching a movie under the stars. The Goonies will be playing in Dolores Park in San Francisco. With the energy of the crowd, you and your family can enjoy this classic kid adventure story. Bring a blanket, a picnic and get there early because you can't beat a free movie with the San Francisco skyline in the background.

Families that love animals can have a different kind of encounter at the zoo by joining along in the summer sleepover series. Set up camp and enjoy dinner that night and breakfast the next day. Get a special twilight behind the scenes tour, create treats for selected creatures and end the night with a show and s'mores by the campfire. The next morning you get to get up close and personal with some animals not on exhibit, a morning tour of the zoo and you get to watch the animals eat the treats you made the night before. Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.

For families that enjoy the literary works of Shakespeare, Winter's Tale is playing in Redwood City. As part of the Shakespeare in the Park series, the play is rotating through out the Bay Area. Part tragedy and part comedy with a mix of clowns, dance and music, this magical tale comes alive for the whole family. The play is free of charge and is performed outdoors to enjoy the summer ambiance.

The annual Festival of the Sea will be celebrating the centennial of the National Parks with activities for the whole family. For fans of all things nautical, there will be a dory drill, a breeches buoy rescue, a dead horse ceremony as well as crafts for kids to make, rope making, maritime story-telling and tours. There will also be a re-dedication for the 1895 Schooner C.A. Thayer and live music on three stages. The festival is free and located at the Hyde Street Pier so you can also enjoy all the ships that are always on display.
