Best Indoor Rock Climbing In The South Bay

Rock climbing offers a fantastic way to mix up a static workout routine or to get out of a fitness rut. Climbing can present new challenges for the body and can make workouts fun and purposeful. Trying out the activity at an indoor gym is an affordable way for beginners to get started learning the ropes. The South Bay has a number of indoor climbing gyms where both beginners and advanced climbers can practice. Here are five to check out.

Nestled in the center of downtown San Jose, The Studio is an 11,000-square-foot climbing facility. Inside, the climbing gym has a variety of terrain including a large area for bouldering as well as a 40-foot lead wall. A number of classes are offered, catering to everyone from the climbing beginner to those looking to get into sport climbing or improve their bouldering. Private lessons are also available, as well as kids camps and climbing teams. Those looking to do a bit of cross training will find plenty of resources with the studios aerobic equipment, free weights, yoga classes and more.

Sunnyvale's Planet Granite location is one of the South Bay's most popular climbing gyms. The facility contains over 25,000 square feet of terrain, which includes 60-foot high walls and a large bouldering area. Terrain is varied to provide a fun and challenging experience for beginners and seasoned climbers alike. After-school sessions are available for kids. Planet Granite offers a well-rounded fitness experience including CrossFit and cycling classes.

For 20 years, Fremont's City Beach has been a multi-use center for corporate events, families and individuals to do team building, break bread and have fun together. Having recently changed ownership, the majority of City Beach will be shuttering its doors, but the rock gym will happily be staying open. The rock gym is open seven days a week and has over 16,000 square feet of climbing walls, as well as a 50-foot lead cave. Day passes are available and classes are offered for beginning through advanced climbers.

Pacific Edge is the Santa Cruz area's leading indoor climbing gym. The gym is open seven days a week and features 50-foot walls and over 11,000 square feet of climbing space. There are several access options including day passes, monthly memberships and kid passes and rental equipment is available. Inside, Pacific Edge houses a fully stocked pro shop that carries everything from shoes and belay gear to harnesses and chalk bags. The gym also offers yoga classes and has cardio and weight rooms.

Overtime Fitness is tucked away on Shoreline Blvd. just around the corner from Google's main campus. While not a climbing-focused gym, the facility does house a large free-standing rock climbing wall available for members to use. The full-service gym is clean and has a bit of everything from bootcamp and yoga classes to free weights and plenty of cardio equipment. All new members receive a free personal training session.
