More Ground Spraying in South Bay

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) West San Jose and Campbell residents can expect more ground spraying in the next week in an effort to suppress West Nile Virus.

The spraying on Tuesday came about after mosquitoes in the area tested positive for the potentially deadly virus.

The Santa Clara County Vector Control District said they are now planning to conduct more spraying on Thursday night, in the area of San Tomas Expressway and Hamilton Avenue because of more problem mosquitoes.

Some residents complained about the chemical used, but Noor Tietze with the vector control district said the chemical Pyrethrin is safe to humans.

"It's the same material used in cat and dog flea shampoo," said Tietze. "So, people are mostly familiar with it."

Studies have shown that a lot of exposure to the chemical can lead to headaches and nausea.

Tietze said that after the ground spraying this past week, there were six informational or complaint calls to the district in an area involving 30,000 households.
