Brown to Investigate Outrageous Salaries in CA Town

California's attorney general says he's subpoenaed hundreds of records from a Los Angeles suburb he's investigating for sky-high salaries earned by its leaders.

Attorney General Jerry Brown says that he's demanding to see employment contracts from the city of Bell within 48 hours to determine whether to file charges.

"We want to find out exactly how they came to the conclusion that city officials should make so much money," Brown said.

The move follows last week's resignation of Bell's city manager, assistant manager and the police chief. They each earned hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to run a poverty-plagued city of about 40,000 people.

A public outcry also has led to demands for a recall of City Council members who are earning about $100,000 a year for part-time work.

Brown says his officer and the state pension system will also review salaries in other local jurisdictions.
