New Crosswalks Give Silicon Valley Walkers a Reprieve
High-tech crosswalks are now being tested in Silicon Valley. They have new sensors that give pedestrians extra time if they are still detected in the crosswalk.
The technology is being tested in a crosswalk near Valley Medical Center in San Jose. If pedestrians are still in the crosswalk by the time the countdown reaches zero sensors detect them and hold traffic until they're safely across.

"If you're someone who is older or handicapped you need that time, and should be given that time," said Frank Chavez, who tried out the new sensor.
The system is designed to comply with new federal guidelines, giving pedestrians more time to get across the street, while at the same time keeping drivers moving.
The $20,000 crossing system has worked so well that it will soon be tested at an expressway.
