Officer Shooting Suspect Claims he Didn't Know Victim Was a Cop

Law enforcement officials say the man accused of shooting a Fremont police officer in East Oakland last week claims he didn't know the man he shot was an officer of the law.

Andrew Barrientos was charged Tuesday with attempted murder and other crimes in connection with the shooting of Officer Todd Young. Young, meantime, remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. He's undergone three surgeries and has more operations scheduled this week.

Barrientos and an accomplice were arrested near the border of Mexico. Both are expected to be returned to Alameda County next week to be arraigned.

Police say Barrientos fired ten shots at Young and another officer, both of whom were in plainclothes, as they were seeking to arrest him on a warrant.
