Oakland City Councilwoman Jean Quan Robbed

OAKLAND (AP) – Police say an Oakland city councilwoman and mayoral candidate had her purse snatched while walking to her neighborhood supermarket.

Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason says 60-year-old Jean Quan was heading to a Safeway store near her Dimond District home around 9:35 p.m. Saturday when a man grabbed her purse and fled. She was not hurt.

Sue Piper, an aide to the councilwoman, says Quan was not immediately available for comment Sunday.

Quan is one of several candidates running for Oakland mayor in November.

Earlier this month City Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente had his Fruitvale District home burglarized for the second time.

In 2007, former State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, who is also running for mayor, was carjacked while driving in North Oakland.

Now they know how the rest of us feel when we are victims and the Police don’t come.

Welcome to the zoo – Oakland.

Sounds like city council members are good game.

Stupid Jean Quan, De La Fuentes, (rest of the city officials) well lets see, you live in the most violent/ crime ridden city in Ca, the 3rd in the country but you layoff 80 police officers in a city that has had only a handfull (5-10) fire related emergencies in a two year period. You give the fire dept a 3yr no layoff clause and give the fire dept a raise in pay, 10- 20% higher pay than a police officer, give OFD a brand new fire house($50 million), city paid food, at the same time say we have no money for police. Police gave you $34 million in concessions and you still say its the police causing the problems in oakland. OPEN your eyes- its you- YOUR “AIDS” that do the work you are highered to do and all the stupid side projects you have bringing down the city and the budget crisis. You havent taken a hit in your pocket. Quan likes spending Oaklands money for a campaign. I’m happy the crime of oakland is finding its way to the stupid council members making bad decisions for the city. YOU DESERVE what you get. Higher more cops in 08- crime rate went down, layoff cops in 10- crime rate went back up, and now your another victim/ statistic. YOU ARE HORRIBLE AT MAKING “the best decisions” for the people of oakland

My bag was snatched on Lakeshore Avenue in broad daylight in June this year. At 5:45 pm. Nothing I could do about it. Laying off police officers is not the way to curb crime which is what was done in Oakland. Now these bad boys have a free way to continue their way of crime.

I’m glad that none of the Councilmembers or candidates have been hurt when they personally experienced crimes. They are quite aware of their constituents’ problems with crime in their districts.

Candidates must follow strict rules about fundraising for their campaigns. Oaklanders have the right to donate to the candidates of their choice.

HELLO!!!! It’s Oakland, what did you expect Ms. Council Woman…. it’s not 90210!

  10. Kit Vaq says:

Councilmember Quan’s family has lived in Oakland for 100 years. She shops in her own neighborhood where her purse was snatched, not Beverly Hills.

  11. jessie says:

article stated that she ran after the suspect, yeah right, article stated that she said take the money but leave my ID, only because the money in her purse was stollen from the people ofthe city.
