Firefighter Critically Hurt In Bodega Bay Grass Fire

BODEGA BAY (CBS/BCN) - A firefighter was critically injured fighting a grassfire along Highway 1 near Bodega Bay Saturday.

The fire prompted the closure of Highway 1 in both directions between Estero Lane and Valley Ford Freestone Road for several hours Saturday afternoon, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

The firefighter who was hurt while battling the blaze apparently came in contact with an energized power line that had fallen down as a result of the fire. He was taken to a local hospital, where his condition was listed as critical, but stable, Cal Fire communications operator Melinda Crabtree said.

Power was knocked out to several Bodega Bay residents over the course of the fire. Crabtree did not know when power was restored. One structure was destroyed by the blaze, as well as two vehicles parked in the area.

The fire also temporarily disabled the ability for nearby residents to make 911 emergency calls. Residents have had to call their local stations to report an emergency, Crabtree said.

The fire which burned 98 acres, was 100 percent contained by Sunday morning, according to a statement from Cal Fire.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. There is currently no estimation of damage cost from the fire.

No other injuries were reported.
