The gloves came off in Wednesday's face-off between Sen. Barbara Boxer and GOP challenger Carly Fiorina, a debate whose tone contrasted sharply with the televised gubernatorial debate the day before.

The KCBS and Chronicle Insider credited the combativeness of the Senate candidates to the lack of television cameras.
Matier said round two tends to be where the punches get harder. The potentially damaging allegations of GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman's housekeeper, for example, could hurt inroads she has made among Latino voters.
