Breast Cancer Screening At Oakland Safeway

OAKLAND (CBS/BCN) -  Women will be able to receive a mammography screening for breast cancer at a Safeway store in Oakland on Tuesday.

The clinic, which will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the store at 3550 Fruitvale Ave., is part of a partnership between the Safeway Foundation and Catholic Healthcare West-St. Joseph's Medical Center, which is providing a mobile mammography unit for use at the store.

Most mammograms will be offered for $80, but women enrolled in certain medical programs may be eligible for a mammogram at no cost.

The mammography clinic, housed in an 18-wheel tractor trailer, is licensed by the state of California, and meets all requirements for performing mammography screenings.

The digital images are read by licensed radiologists, and results are sent to patients and their physicians within two to three weeks of the exam.

The screenings are available by appointment to anyone with a physician's referral. To make an appointment, contact Marivel Costa of the mobile mammography program at (866) 430-8222 or by e-mail at marivel.costa@chw.edu.
