Grand Reopening Of Oakland Bakery

OAKLAND (KCBS) - An old Oakland business has a new start, thanks to the innovation and collaboration of its employees and its building owners.

After 81 years at 34th and Telegraph in Oakland, the owners of Neldam's Bakery shut down this past July.

Mark Davis had been a baker there for 37 years.

"We'd been struggling for a while, so it wasn't a total shock," he said.

KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:

Davis said he didn't know what to do when the bakery closed. Then building owner Sukhee Yu, who didn't want the space to be vacant, approached him and other Neldam's employees with the idea of starting their own bakery.

"Since I've been in the real estate broker's business for almost 30 years, I know how to operate a business," Yu said.

Yu and some investors provided the start up money, and 10 former employees of Neldam's signed on to start the Taste of Denmark, making many long-time customers very happy.
