Man Convicted In '06 Fremont Jewelry Store Murder
FREMONT (AP) - A Menlo Park man has been convicted of murder and robbery in the slaying of a jewelry store owner who refused to hand over his Rolex watch.
Alameda County prosecutors say 29-year-old Troy Powell was convicted on Tuesday in the January 2006 robbery that left Ronald Morris dead.
The 55-year-old Morris was shot in the head at his jewelry and loan store in Fremont after he refused to turn over the watch.
Authorities say Powell was among four masked men who attempted to rob the store.
Prosecutor Amilcar Ford tells the San Francisco Chronicle that Powell did not shoot Morris, but did organize the robbery.
Another defendant, 26-year-old Caurice Ulmer, is awaiting trial.
A date has not yet been set.
No one has been charged with actually opening fire at Morris.
