2-Alarm Fire Damages Hayward Hispanic Church

HAYWARD (BCN) - Alameda County firefighters extinguished a two-alarm blaze at a church in unincorporated Hayward on Friday, a fire spokeswoman said.

No one was in the Seventh Day Adventist Hispanic Church, located at 22117 Meekland Ave., when the fire broke out about 4:20 p.m. in an annex building toward the back the of the lot, spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

Firefighters contained the blaze in about 40 minutes, she said.

A propane tank exploded while the fire was being fought, but no one was injured in the blast.

A fire broke out at a different building on the property in 2009, Knowles said. That building was later removed altogether.

Investigators determined the cause to be accidental, she said.

Apparently it began when propane caught fire.
